Yakumama is situated a little outside Sambaqui, a small fishing village in the north of the Island of Santa Catarina, Brazil – an area which has become very attractive in recent years.
The neighborhood is quiet and safe, the beach is three minutes away and we are so fortunate as to have a large nature reserve right next to the property, which also offers ample opportunity for great hikes. Despite Yakumama’s few neighbours and quiet location, Florianopolis, the island’s main city, as well as the great beaches on the island’s east coast, are just a 30 minute drive away.
Yakumama’s organic design integrates beautifully with the surrounding lush hillsides and a spectacular view of the ocean and distant shore of the continent, and since the houses face north, we get a full day of sunlight – from sunrise to sunset.
The grounds are extensive, we have our own source of good quality water and over time we hope to have a large organic garden with many varieties of fruits, nuts, vegetables and herbs, as well as beautiful flowers. Banana palms grow naturally on the grounds, and we have already planted avocado and papaya trees with many more to come. The land offers an abundance of beautiful and colorful flowers, butterflies and birds – ranging from tiny hummingbirds to large birds of prey – to study or just enjoy, just as it’s a great spot for star watching.
We intend to keep a large part of the land uncultivated and more or less undisturbed, thereby creating ample space for the native flora and fauna to thrive.
